Bali - A multi-sensory lamp

Bali
Accent Table Lamp

Humans have an inherent inclination towards nature, and Bali embodies nature by bringing the outdoors beauty and feel inside. The concept promotes a multi-sensorial lighting experience that interacts with the user at different levels (Visceral, Behavioral & reflective) by triggering their different sense and combining the idea of minimalism with a touch of crafted texture.

Inspired by the look of bamboo, Bali's body has an intricate pattern made through weaving techniques which create a delightful optical illusion of light and shadow. Stands on a metal base through its center, it is connected by a translucent outer rotating frame made from recycled fishing nets that adds a touch of playfulness by encouraging human interaction.

Bali illuminates with an incandescent bulb, and the illumination effect can change through the coaxial rotating frame. The above is achieved with an internal mechanism integrated by the central axis and the outer rim. It also diffuses scent by the bulb's heat, providing an additional feature to people by enriching the sensory experience.

Mechanism

Over here, my initial idea was to design simple interaction between the user and the product with high affordance, as I believe simplified things require more time & involvement in the process. While working on the mechanism and components, I understood that designing a simple product is sometimes more challenging than complex ones.

Bali offers opportunities to artisans to revive their traditional way of making products. Upcycling fishing nets make up the outer rotating translucent frame. Nowadays, designers and engineers make efforts to reconsider what has been called ‘waste’ as ‘raw material’. Now they contribute to this purpose by recovering fishing gear and improving the material properties to become an option to produce new products.

Packaging

Bali comes in a Frosted laminated glass top and cork base packaging with the product detail and concept note printed on it. Laminated glass is used because of its safety & security advantages. The packaging is designed in such a way so that a user can easily carry or transport without damaging it.
